Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions

NAS is a storage networking architecture that allows storage subsystems to connect directly onto the existing computing network, the Local Area Network (LAN). Traditional storage subsystems apply Direct Attached Storage (DAS) to the back end of the servers and have used costly application server capacity to transfer data from storage devices to clients. This “application server tax” is avoided in the NAS architecture by attaching a smaller, less expensive server to a disk subsystem and directly attaching the combined subsystem onto the LAN, thus forgoing the traditional dependence of file system access on the application servers.

Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions

SAN is a storage networking architecture that enables the more efficient use of storage assets by decoupling server and storage capacities with a dedicated network. Much like a Local Area Network (LAN), a SAN enables greater scalability and reliability for computer storage resources, making them less expensive to implement and easier to manage. In a SAN, a dedicated storage network is inserted between servers and various storage subsystems. The storage network is generally composed of a number of switches which interconnect servers and storage.
